Why AI Can Never Compete With Human Creativity
When you put creativity into everything, everything becomes available to you.” -Robert Rodriguez
In Georgia, a young boy sits down at a piano, feels white ivory under long, black fingers. A lonely bedroom in Brooklyn is filled with the sound of three chords that will start a revolution. A young girl hides in the attic, pours her heart into a diary. An old man types a dystopian nightmare on a long scroll. A thousand photos focus, snap, and blast into cyberspace, multiply and land in a million pairs of hands. A chapel reeks of fumes, the ceiling is wet with paint. A dozen cans of spray paint empty in a chemical swirl across the back wall of a liquor store.
It lives inside us all. Way down there, at the bottom of everything, is the primal scream to Create. To Reveal. To bring our Authentic Self — that invincible moving target — into physical existence.
To have. To hold. To try and live forever.
Creativity is the last great frontier standing between humans and artificial intelligence. Machines can never replicate true creativity because codes and algorithms are based on predictions of what is expected to happen.
Creativity is the unexpected.
Creativity is a round-trip ticket from reality to elsewhere and back again. Must be human to ride. Only humans have the ability to leave the material world through a secret hatch in the mind and free-fall to the outer banks of imagination. To wrestle and dance with the subconscious. To travel with material world problems and return with outer-world solutions, ready to Create something new. Something that didn’t exist before.
The word creative may conjure images of books, paintings, and films. But the act of creativity goes beyond words on a page or colors on a canvas. Creativity is a daily rebellion against closed minds and social norms. It’s how we turn dead-ends into endless possibilities. It happens each time we look at something and ask, “How can I overcome this? How can I explain this? How can I make this even better?”
The greatest gifts we will give to the world will be born out of creativity. And it is through creativity that we will close the gap between the often-overwhelming and ever-haunting disparity between who we are and who we want to become.
As humans, it’s not enough to retreat into our imaginations and dream of all the creative adventures we wish to have. What matters — what really separates us from the machines — is our ability to return to reality, armed with Human inspiration, and deliver our creative gifts into existence.
By completing the journey, we fulfill our primal need to Reveal ourselves, to share our work, and to challenge, honor, and evolve what it means to be Human.
